While reading Matthew 3:13-17, a profound revelation came to me. This passage discusses the baptism of Jesus Christ, but before diving into that, let’s reflect on the foundational aspects of baptism. In Matthew 3:6, it says, "And when they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River." Here, we see that people first confessed their sins, and then John baptized them in the river, symbolizing the cleansing of sin.
Then Jesus approached John to be baptized. John, knowing that Jesus was without sin, hesitated. This is why we see a discussion in the verses, but ultimately, Jesus insisted. He said in Matthew 3:15, "It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires." And so, John agreed. This act was not because Jesus needed cleansing but because he came to fulfill his Father’s will.
What struck me deeply was what happened afterward. The heavens opened, and the Spirit of God descended on Jesus like a dove. Then, a voice from heaven declared, "This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy" (Matthew 3:17).
God wasn’t “flexing” or boasting about Jesus. Instead, He was expressing profound love, saying, in essence: “This is my beloved Son, the one who brings me joy, whom I am giving to you. He will be crucified for your sake to show how much I love you.” This reveals the depth of God’s love and the unity between the Father and the Son. Everything Jesus did pleased His Father.
Jesus is not just someone we acknowledge casually; He is our very life. His baptism, though He was sinless, was an act of obedience to His Father’s will. It reminds us of the incredible gift of salvation and the immense love God has for us.
Let’s not take His name lightly. Jesus is greater than anything or anyone. Let’s open our eyes to this truth, follow Him, learn from Him, and honor Him every day. May His name never be simple to us again. Amen!
