Reflection on Nehemiah 6
Before we even start this chapter, let me say a little about Nehemiah. I really love this man his view of God, his understanding of destiny, his definition of family, and his leadership style are all so inspiring. Sometimes I even ask myself, “Was he really from the Old Testament?” because his dependence on God and God only feels so much like New Testament faith.
Main Lesson
The main lesson I took from this chapter is this: Don’t stop walking the path of Christ even when troubles and pressures come from all directions. Stay focused on the mission God has placed in your heart, and never give up.
The Challenges Nehemiah Faced
This chapter is full of personal attacks on Nehemiah’s character while he was rebuilding the city walls. I’ll point out the main challenges he faced and what we can learn from them.
1️⃣ The First Challenge — Attempts to Stop His Work (Nehemiah 6:1–5, 8–9) Nehemiah 6:1–5 (NLT) [1] Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies found out that I had finished rebuilding the wall and that no gaps remained though we had not yet set up the doors in the gates. [2] So Sanballat and Geshem sent a message asking me to meet them at one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But I realized they were plotting to harm me, [3] so I replied by sending this message to them: “I am engaged in a great work, so I can’t come. Why should I stop working to come and meet with you?” [4] Four times they sent the same message, and each time I gave the same reply. [5] The fifth time, Sanballat’s servant came with an open letter in his hand…
Nehemiah’s enemies realized he had completed the wall except for the gates, and they tried to distract him pretending to call for a meeting, but really plotting to harm him. Their goal was to stop the work before it was done.
Think about this in your life: sometimes you’re peacefully walking in the path God showed you, and people even friends might align with your “enemies” to distract or stop you. But Nehemiah said, “I am engaged in a great work.” He knew his mission, and he didn’t stop.
He was challenged five times! That’s not random. It shows how persistent opposition can be. And yet, he stood firm every single time. That teaches us not to take it lightly it’s written in one verse, but it represents real, repeated pressure.
2️⃣ The Second Challenge — False Reports and Rumors (Nehemiah 6:5–8) They made up lies and wrote false letters accusing Nehemiah of trying to become king and rebel.
Nehemiah 6:8–9 (NLT) [8] I replied, “There is no truth in any part of your story. You are making up the whole thing.” [9] They were just trying to intimidate us, imagining that they could discourage us and stop the work. So I continued the work with even greater determination.
Imagine while doing God’s work faithfully, you’re suddenly accused of something you didn’t even think of. How would you react? Nehemiah’s response amazes me.
He didn’t panic or lose focus. He said, “There is no truth in your story.” He called it out clearly and instead of slowing down, he said, “I continued the work with even greater determination.”
Oooow wow 😮 — even as I’m reading this now in English, I’m discovering new meaning! The way he handled this is beyond normal. That’s why I love this man his strength, focus, and trust in God are so deep. And if Nehemiah could do this in the Old Testament, how much more should we ,who now live under grace show this same character!
3️⃣ The Third Challenge — Threats to His Life (Nehemiah 6:10–14) A man came claiming that God told him to tell Nehemiah to hide in the Temple because people were coming to kill him.
From this, I learned two powerful lessons: 1. Not all messages that sound spiritual come from God. This man wasn’t an enemy Nehemiah even went to his house. But still, he was used to deliver a false message. Sometimes challenges come from people we know and trust.
2. Always test the spirit behind the message. Nehemiah discerned that this message was not from God but a trap that the man had been hired by Tobiah and Sanballat.
Nehemiah 6:11–12 (NLT) [11] “Should someone in my position run from danger? Should someone in my position enter the Temple to save his life? No, I won’t do it!” [12] I realized that God had not spoken to him, but that he had uttered this prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
This reminds me of Acts 16, when Paul met a woman who spoke “prophecy” but was actually speaking through an evil spirit. Nehemiah, like Paul, checked the source.
His answer shows his faith: “Should I run to save myself?” No! He completely trusted God with his life. What a man of faith!
Why Nehemiah Stayed Strong 1. He surrendered his life fully to God. He knew that his safety and success were in God’s hands, not his own actions.
2. He discerned every message. Nehemiah didn’t just listen he tested the spirit behind every word he heard.
3. He lived with righteousness and truth. His enemies wanted to trick him into sin so they could accuse him, but he didn’t fall for it. Many servants of God today still face the same traps and some fall. But Nehemiah didn’t.
The Outcome Nehemiah 6:15 (NLT) [15] So on October 2 the wall was finished, just fifty-two days after we had begun.
Despite all attacks, the wall was completed in 52 days. That’s incredible!
How did he do it? 1. Through prayer. Let’s keep praying daily, asking God not to let us pause or hold back His plan.
2. Through staying connected to God’s presence. Like Nehemiah, we must keep God first.
3. By ignoring false voices. Don’t let rumors or unjust criticism distract you. God is the only true judge.
4. By holding tightly to God’s vision. Never back down from the purpose God placed in your heart.
The Result Nehemiah 6:16 (NLT) [16] When our enemies and the surrounding nations heard about it, they were frightened and humiliated. They realized this work had been done with the help of our God.
When the work was done, even Nehemiah’s enemies recognized it was only possible through God’s help.
Just like Matthew 5:16 (NLT) says: “In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”
They will see the art but also recognize the Artist who made it happen.
Final Thought Let’s pray for the same faith and character as Nehemiah to stay focused, to test what we hear, and to keep walking in the vision God gave us no matter the challenges.
Even now, reading this chapter again in English, I keep discovering new lessons that’s how alive the Word of God is. Every time you read it, it reveals something deeper.
May God help us live with the same heart and courage Nehemiah had.
