How Much Do We Really Trust God?

A Reflection on Matthew 5:13–16 — Salt and Light

How much do we trust God? How far are we truly willing to trust Him?

Reflecting on Matthew 5:13–16, the well-known passage about Salt and Light, I found myself wrestling with this question. I don’t know about you, but I often try to measure my trust in God by how I handle big, impossible situations. Yet, I tend to lose sight when it comes to the “small” things, assuming I can handle them on my own. I may think I accomplished something, but the truth is, I misunderstood what seemed simple.

This passage, though familiar, made me rethink everything. We often treat the Salt and Light analogy as a basic teaching, but have we truly grasped it?

Let’s look at the verses closely:

Matthew 5:13 – “You are the salt of the earth.” Matthew 5:14 – “You are the light of the world.”

Did you catch that? Jesus said, “You are”, not try to be, not one day you'll become, but you already are.

This echoes Ephesians 5:8:

“For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light!”

So, what is Jesus really teaching here? Is He telling us to become Salt and Light? No. Is He saying we should pray to become Salt and Light? Still, no.

He's saying: you already are. Live like it. Don’t lose it.

Salt that loses its flavor is no longer useful. Light that is hidden under a basket can’t help anyone. Jesus is urging us not to forfeit the identity we've already been given through Him.

Matthew 5 begins with blessings what we call the Beatitudes (verses 3–10). Jesus first declares what God blesses, then outlines what those who follow Him will face:

“You will be mocked, persecuted, lied about…” (verses 11–12)

And then He says, even in that, you are the Salt and the Light for the world.

Now, here’s the part that struck me deeply: Even when Jesus was teaching this, the 12 disciples weren’t all chosen yet, for example, Matthew himself wasn’t called until chapter 9. Still, Jesus says: You are the Salt and Light of the world!

That’s powerful.

So, to those who feel like you're just starting your walk with Jesus, or that you're not ready, know this: God is not trusting in your ability. He is trusting in Himself, living within you.

1 Corinthians 3:16 – “Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you?”

1 Corinthians 3:18–23 goes on to remind us not to trust our own wisdom, because even the “foolishness” of God is far greater than human understanding.

And then in verse 22:

“Everything belongs to you, and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.”

God is reminding us not to lose our identity. Salt must keep its flavor. Light must stay visible. Live like who you are. For salt — add flavor. For light — shine from the stand, not under a basket.

So what does it look like to live this way?

It means staying connected to our source — Jesus. And if you want to define what this character looks like, read Matthew 5:3–10. These verses outline eight key traits, a blend of blessings and responsibilities that followers of Jesus inherit.

These aren't just traits, they reflect who Jesus is. You can summarize His heart in these verses.

Then we arrive at verse 16, which moved me deeply:

Matthew 5:16 – “In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see....”

This isn’t about boasting. It’s about doing what reflects God, simply and consistently.

Let me take you back in time for a moment remember when integrity was associated with us, the people of God? Even if the world persecuted us, mocked us, or rejected our beliefs  they still needed us. They trusted our integrity. Our fathers(back in ethiopia) were known for it. In old time, were being a Christian was not a good choices.

That is what it means to be Salt and Light, not popularity, not numbers, but integrity, impact, and trusting God deeply.

Don’t you want to see that again in our generation? Don’t you long for a time when people of God walk in such visible truth that the world can’t help but notice?

It’s not about how many of us there are, it’s about how much we trust God.

Think about Acts 2, a moment when just a few disciples gathered, prayed, and the Holy Spirit came upon them. The result? 3,000 people were added to the Kingdom in one day.

Why? Because they trusted God.

That’s what I want. That’s what I’m praying for, to live like Salt and Light, never losing flavor, never hiding the light I’ve been given.

Final Reflection

Let’s not forget what verse 16 ends with:

“…so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”

Have you ever thought about that our good deeds leading to people praising God? How amazing is that? That the way we live could lead others to glorify Him?

That’s the ultimate goal. That’s the greatest joy.

Prayer

God, thank You for this Word. It comforts and challenges us. Help us to live as Salt and Light in this world. Help us understand not only the blessings but also the responsibilities You’ve placed in us. Open our hearts to trust You more and more. Remind us that nothing is done by our own strength, everything is a gift from You.

Help us live according to Your Word. Let Your presence be seen in our friendships, our families, our communities, our work, in everything we touch. Let Your grace be with us day and night.

Jesus, we need You. For our friends, families, neighbors, and this world, we don’t want to hide You. How could we? Let Your light shine through us. We believe this and pray in Your name Amen.
