Till Our Bright Morning Star Comes

This morning I came across a teaching on biblical doctrine, focused on 2 Peter 1:16–21. As I prepared to study the teaching more deeply, I began reading the passage myself, and I couldn’t move past it. I felt led to pause and reflect. What follows is my understanding, especially of the phrase that points to Jesus as the Morning Star. In short, this passage speaks to the truth and reliability of God’s Word, the prophecy of Scripture. It reminds us why we should hold firmly to what is written in the Bible. Scripture was not written out of human opinion or personal interpretation; rather, it was spoken from God as people were moved by the Holy Spirit. Now let me come to the verse where I felt compelled to stop and go deeper.

Throughout the Bible, Jesus is repeatedly described as light. Peter begins by recalling what he personally saw and heard, the voice of God the Father speaking about God the Son: “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”

Matthew, Luke, and Mark all record this moment, but I was especially struck by how Mark describes it. Listen to how vividly it captures the scene: Mark 9:2–3 (NLT) Six days later Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and led them up a high mountain to be alone. As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance was transformed, and his clothes became dazzling white, far whiter than any earthly bleach could ever make them. Pause and picture that. Dazzling white far whiter than anything earthly could produce. It sounds simple, but it carries profound meaning. It tells us that no earthly effort no “bleach,” no good deeds, can make us truly clean. Only He can. That alone is a powerful truth, but for now, let’s stay with the passage. Then God the Father speaks again: Mark 9:7 (NLT) Then a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my dearly loved Son. Listen to him.” Nothing needs to be added to that.

Now let’s return to Peter’s words: 2 Peter 1:19 (NLT) Because of that experience, we have even greater confidence in the message proclaimed by the prophets. You must pay close attention to what they wrote, for their words are like a lamp shining in a dark place, until the Day dawns, and Christ the Morning Star shines in your hearts. This is the heart of what I want to share.

Peter is saying that because of what he personally witnessed, he now has deep confidence in Scripture, the Word of God. At that time, Scripture was his protection, his anchor. He urges us to pay close attention to the Word: to listen to it, read it, and dwell in it. Why? Because it is true. It reveals the truth, God’s Son.

Peter compares God’s Word to a lamp shining in a dark place. A lamp isn’t something you treat casually. One small mistake, and you’re left in darkness. In the same way, God’s Word must be guarded, valued, and held carefully. It is what protects us, guides us, and leads us through the darkest times of this world. Then comes the key word: “until.” Until the Day dawns. Until Christ, the Morning Star, shines fully.

Peter calls Jesus the Morning Star—the One who will return in full glory. Until that day, we have Scripture as our light, and the Holy Spirit to illuminate it and guide us into truth. Scripture confirms this again: Revelation 2:28 (NLT) [28]  They will have the same authority I received from my Father, and I will also give them the morning star!

Revelation 22:16 (NLT) “I am both the source of David and the heir to his throne. I am the bright morning star.”

Jesus will come again. And when He does, He will fill us completely. That purity, whiter than anything this world can produce,will be fully given to us. Until then, as we walk through the darkness of this world, let His Word be our true source. Let us read it. Let us understand it through His Spirit. Let it be our eyes, our confidence, our guide.May we live like people carrying a lamp in dark places, shining His light to others.

God, help us daily to return to Your Word. Let it shine in our lives. Be our only light, until the day Your Son becomes our full and eternal light. In the name of Jesus Christ, we believe. Amen.
